Liminal Power : The Icons Redefined
Liminal. adj
- relating to a transitional or initial stage of a process.
- occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold.
Liminality, from the Latin word ’Līmen’, meaning "a threshold", is the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of a rite of passage, transitioning to a new status. During a rite's liminal stage, participants "stand at the threshold" between their previous way of structuring their identity, time, or community and the new being.
In modern times, this concept has broadened to describe political and cultural change as well as rites. During liminal periods of all kinds, social hierarchies may be reversed or temporarily dissolved, continuity of tradition may become uncertain. Allowing for all sorts of possibilities and curiosities…
The liminal energy of the modern woman crosses all our capabilities, and all the facets of being a woman. Part of our power and strength is that we can do so much and be so many different ways. Our bodies, our spirits, our minds and our strength all deserve celebrating, and we want to empower and entice women to explore that female power in a way like never before.
This year Charli Howard takes centre stage as the Coco de Mer icon. Her bravery, her beauty, her vulnerability, her strength, her drive for female empowerment and her tireless work towards making the fashion industry, and society in general, a more inclusive, accepting and diverse universe is an iconic combination. To further elevate this captivating campaign, a familiar face goes behind the lens. A passing of the torch like no other. Complete, unashamed empowerment.
Twice an icon for Coco de Mer, Helena Christensen is back, but rather than being in front of the lens, this campaign celebrates her as a renowned photographer, to focus on her gaze, her mind, her creativity. Both Helena and Charli have an enchanting romance about them - a delicacy that is utterly precious. A vulnerability that, harnessed by themselves, can be a hidden power.
This campaign is an inspiring sense of embrace between women, a rallying rather than a competition. An encouraging of the most empowered sense of self for the next generation of icons. Together these women will push their boundaries and elevate themselves and all women, inspiring us all to celebrate the female form and our pleasures in every way.
“This campaign is about women supporting and celebrating each other. Charli’s bravery has been palpable from the very start of her career; fighting back, learning self love and setting a healthy, kinder standard for peers and generations to come. She is a force for good in all the ways - redefining iconic. Combine this with Helena, who understands, and elevates, every aspect of what it is to be a Coco de Mer Icon. Knowing her talents as a photographer, this made perfect sense to the iconic story we have been creating over the years. Having seen things through her lens, we know the female gaze, placed in her hands, lends a romantic touch, and a gentle confidence - qualities that resonate with the Coco de Mer woman.”
Lucy Litwack, CEO & Owner
“This is one of those career moments, where you look back and tell the young woman starting out to keep that dream going. The female form, of all kinds, should be every bit as celebrated as the soul and strength within. The empowerment we enable with a message like this, just imagining the good that comes from that is an absolute pleasure and makes me so incredibly proud. Having worked with Lucy and the Coco de Mer team on a number of campaigns now, you feel so liberated and celebrated, the ethos really does resonate from the deep core to every magical touchpoint. Helena is also such an inspiration for me in every way, so to be working together on a concept like this, really does mean the world. Here’s to liminal power.”
Charli Howard
“It’s been amazing to work with Coco de Mer on their Icons Campaign for now 3 years in a row. There’s so much to the world of lingerie and such an intimate, beautiful relationship can be had with each piece. To be both in front of and behind the lens for these campaigns has been such a joy for me. I’ve always known and loved Coco de Mer, and now I have a very personal relationship with Lucy and the entire team. When you actually know the people behind the brand who have worked so hard to create it you respect and admire them on a whole different level and it becomes an honour to be part of their dream and journey. Charli is such an inspiring woman, with the most incredible energy. I can’t wait to bring this new concept of iconic to life.”
